Land Trust "Giving Day" Challenge Helps Raise Funds and Strengthen a Connecticut Community

land-trust-250x172We recently heard about a charitable program in Danbury, CT, that was created to bring six area conservation land trusts together to participate in a one-day “Giving Day” Challenge to raise funds for their shared services program. It struck us that this type of event could work just as well Marion County or Hamilton County as it could in Fairfield County.

As reported on the Danbury South’s HamletHub website1, “Giving Day” is a community-wide online giving challenge which seeks to increase philanthropy for participating nonprofit organizations. The six area land trusts that make up the Northern Fairfield Land Trust Coalition each announced that they would be committed to working together to make each land trust stronger, while spreading the word about the need to protect vital resources throughout the Greater Danbury area.

A conservation land trust is “a private, nonprofit organization that, as all or part of its mission, actively works to conserve land by undertaking or assisting in land or conservation easement acquisition, or by its stewardship of such land or easements.”2
[blockquote cite=”Guy Peterson, Chairman of the Northern Fairfield Land Trust Coalition”]”Giving Day” offers a unique opportunity to let many people know about the work of land trusts and support this work in a way that protects the local communities through the combined efforts of each land trust,” stated Guy Peterson, Chairman of the newly formed group.[/blockquote]
The challenge will run for 24 hours only on March 6, 2014; by pooling resources and working together by sharing services such as fundraising, community outreach, and land stewardship, the land trusts will become stronger, individually and collectively.
